Actil’s story began during the Second World War under circumstances that sound like one of your fathers tall tales.

ACTIL stands for Australian Cotton Textile Industries Limited. In 1942, machinery intended for a new cotton mill in Java was diverted to Adelaide as Japanese forces advanced through the region. South Australian premier Tom Playford seized the opportunity and offered land at Woodville for a local mill.

The factory was built in approximately six and a half weeks. The first cotton was spun there on 25 February 1942, and the new mill was capable of producing around 60,000 pounds of yarn each week at a time when Australia was facing serious textile shortages.

The Woodville factory became part of the growth of Australia’s domestic textile industry. Actil went on to manufacture products including bed sheets, pillowcases and towelling, and the company’s name became closely associated with Australian bed linen.

After the war, Actil’s First Line sheets and pillowcases developed a loyal following in Australian homes. The brand became particularly known for cotton bed linen made to cope with regular washing and everyday use.

Why buying sheet separates makes sense

1. Wash before sleeping on them.
   This begins relaxing the cotton and removes the finish associated with packaging.
2. Give Commercial sheets time.
   Commercial is deliberately crisper than First Line. Judge its true feel after repeated washing, not straight from the packet.
3. Use a sensible amount of mild detergent.
   More detergent does not necessarily produce cleaner sheets, and residue can affect the fabric’s feel.
4. Avoid excessive fabric softener.
   Actil is chosen for its clean cotton character. Heavy use of coating products can work against that natural hand.
5. Do not bleach.
   Follow the product instructions and use an appropriate non-bleach treatment for marks where required.
6. Line dry
   Line drying suits the traditional fresh, crisp finish many Actil owners love. Tumble drying can also be used where permitted by the label.
7. Fold or place on the bed after drying
